...which Lonely Planet tells us were to be bought for their weight in gold from the first person to bring any back from the Orient to her majesty Queen Victoria still in fit condition to eat. An off mangosteen is not a pleasing sight or taste, so the penalty for failure probably was steep too. I've never seen them so pretty as in that photo.

That's what they look like in SE Asia. If you're in North America, they look like mush. They simply don't transport well, spoil quickly, and apparently the US doesn't allow them into the country. I have found frozen mangosteens in DC, but they were awful.
