Bits and Pieces - May 25, 2010

First, the oily bits:

An explanation of the "top kill" BP is planning for Wednesday morning. Warning: very wonky! But very good if you are a wonk.

More about working at those depths.

BP may be barred from government contracts, but it supplies a lot of fuel to the military.

Here's an idea for regulating the oil industry.

The thread at Balloon Juice from which some of these links were gleaned. The comments are worth reading; it seems to be the people with the least technical knowledge who are most vocal that someone must do something.

For a change of pace, something about China's role in the dispute between North and South Korea. Via, which has a bit more to say about this.

I don't see why providing oil to the military is a big deal. Obama has been comfortable nationalizing other industries. Why not foreign-owned nationals that can't address oil spills in target countries? Maybe Exxon should take over BP's operations in the Gulf... we might get faster response that way...

This is so dumb - even as sarcasm, the linguistic form that gives the illusion of wit - it's hard to know where or to want to begin.

I can't tell if it's sarcasm or just dumb, a symptom of the same thing we're seeing in the demands for Obama to "do something" about the leak.

We've made our lives too easy through engineering; the engineering (pipes, chains, cement, mud) becomes invisible, and it's easy never to understand just how hard it is to really do stuff. Including changing a bureaucracy or people's habits of energy use.

I've been thinking of a post on that subject...
