The incident took place in the town of Aramoun, a Hezbollah stronghold. Hezbollah subsidizes housing for their supporters there. In return, the civilians are exposed to hours of blasting sermons from loudspeakers. This is not a mosque broadcasting prayers, but a regular building in a somewhat dense residential area.According to media reports, neighboring residents complained about the speakers. It's been stated - but disputed by other sources - that the city of Aramoun ordered the removal of the speakers.
Local police moved in to carry out the order, only to be threatened by Hezbollah officials waving weapons. Words were exchanged, and soon the police and Hezbollah were shooting at each other.
The Lebanese Army - non-sectarian, but mostly under the control of President Lahoud - intervened. But they didn't arrest or even question those who had threatened the local police carrying out what would appear to be a lawful order. Instead, they arrested the six policemen themselves - along with "two other people," who may or may not be members of Hezbollah.
