War photos

If you don't have a subscription to Salon, get the day pass and read this article -- "Iraq: The Unseen War" -- and look at its accompanying photographs. Some of the photos are very difficult to look at, so caution. But I think we have to see them if we're ever going to have a better sense of what we sow. There's a great distance between driving the SUV to the golf course or hanging out on the beach in late summer or wondering who's next to be kicked off of your prefered reality show and the reality on the ground in Iraq. The distance is more obscene than the photos.

Susan Sontag, not long before she died, left us a great little book, Regarding the Pain of Others. Pick it up and read. "When there are photographs, a war becomes 'real.'"
