Indonesian Islamic democracy

Interesting little article in the IHT on Indonesia. Conservative Islam has been gaining ground in Indonesia through democratic means. Just what is it that the Bush administration wants from democratic Islam (and "freed'm")? If the administration believed its own rhetoric, wouldn't they have to rejoice?

My take has always been that the US is after economic liberalization and the conditions for economic liberalization, not democracy. Democracy only matters if it is part of the equation in economic liberalization and privatization. The Bush administration couldn't care less about democracy itself, and freedom is simply equated with market choices. If you want to understand truly why this presidency is stupid, this is it.
