New Orleans diaspora

I was talking yesterday over coffee with some people on K Street (yes, lobbyist central). These are folks highly-placed within the DC political world from previous administrations but now working in the private sector world of influence on the Democratic side. One thing I hadn't heard before was that Katrina and the aftereffects and policy have intention behind them, not simply incompetence on the part of the administration. This sounds conspiratorial, I know, and it is certainly anecdotal, but this comes from connected people.

Among some Republicans in the world of K Street connections there is the thinking that by driving blacks from their devastated homes and out of the state in many cases, Katrina did the Republican Party in Louisiana a favor. It turned the state into a firmly red state. Yes, wealthy whites lost their homes too. But operatives in and for the Party "did the math" and calculated that the loss equalled a net political gain.

Consider that.

I have no doubt that the GOP folks are "doing the math" on any number of potential disasters, natural and man made. There simply is no limit to these guy's cynicism or recklessness. Bush, Cheney, Rove, et al will ice anyone, ANYONE, in a heartbeat if it will further their ends.
