It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it.....

You can't dance to it at all. Cage challenged our deepest aesthetic conventions about dance. For instance, my wife and I argue over whether to waltz or cha cha cha to 4'33".

I've never seen this performed, so I'm curious how the piano player who's not playing knows when he/she has reached 4'33". Is there a beeper? An egg timer? Does the audience applaud at precisely the correct moment? What if someone claps at 4'32"? Does this destroy the piece?

It's a matter of individual artistic interpretation. I like the digital performances best.
