Today's World Cup

Oh hohoho.... Trinidad & Tobago (TNT) have tied England 0-0 at the half, nearly scoring a goal in the extra time. England's attacking, and Rooney will likely substitute in for the second half. But the TNT defense is holding so far (with a little luck). A tie with England would be huge.

I'd love to see the Soca Warriors score their first ever World Cup goal, and England can then score whatever it likes. A goal would be a victory.

UPDATE (1:52EST):

Shit.

Do not look at that final score. The Soca Warriors played one hell of a game. England stinks. And the best goal of the match was actually a non-goal (barely offside) by TNT.

Don't be so mean-spirited. All three strikes (both England goals and the TNT near-goal) were beautiful. I'd give the nod to Gerrard's lovely feint right-lunge left-shoot sequence.

Nonetheless, if England can't figure out how to capture the intensity they showed in the last 10 minutes and deploy it throughout the match, they're not going far in this competition.

Aw, shite. I'm running out of teams to root for. Rooting for Argentina or Brazil would be too much like rooting for the Yankess or the Dallas Cowboys.

There are some things even a lawyer won't do.....

Geoff - An England fan telling an American not to be mean-spirited about football/soccer? That's like Upside-Down Land or Opposite Day or somethin'. The US has arrived!

Yeah, I grant that those two English goals were nice, especially Gerrard's. Just a bit disgruntled that TNT couldn't get a point on the board for their fine efforts, and that pretty back-heel TNT near-goal would have done the trick nicely.

That said, I agree that England has to play with more spirit. Maybe this will happen once they meet a team with a reputation. It's hard to tell. But it's truly in the moments where a team is really challenged that they show their stuff. And, ok, England felt threatened in the final ten minutes and showed their stuff.

Roxtar - I agree. I like Brazil, like most of the players except for Ronaldo, like to watch them play, and like the country and its culture. But I can't bring myself to root for the team (unless they play Italy or Argentina in the final).

Brazil is not like the Yankees. Year in and year out, they have the best players, the best style and the best team that money cannot buy. And that makes all the difference.

Go Brazil!

They are like the Yankees. Yankees don't start out millionaires. Brazilian soccer players end up millionaires. I don't see much difference on that count.
