Is a Coup d'Etat Possible?

I've long wondered what might happen in the US political world (apart from the moral issue and international opinion) if the Bush Administration committed to anything other than limited airstrikes on Iran - that is, if they used nuclear weapons or attempted to invade. There is a lot of disgruntlement in the military, both retired and active. We hear from the retired military people because they're more at liberty to speak publicly and openly. But there are good signs that the resentment and mistrust of the administration for its debacle in Iraq and general incompetence runs deep. Rodger today cites more evidence of this "revolt."

With plans for an attack on Iran in place and deployment happening while we speak, we have to wonder to what extent the administration would attempt to make good on their threatening moves. Given the overcommitment in Iraq and Afghanistan already, an attack on Iran would be folly. It would be folly for a number of other reasons as well, but this particular one could lead to more than just a retired generals' revolt. These are, after all, people who retired so that they could speak publicly. What would be the next step? Is a coup d'état possible in the US?

Could this situation, for instance, play the role of flashpoint?
A new Middle East war is in the offing. DEBKAfile’s exclusive military sources in Iraq and sources in Iran reveal that Turkish and Iranian air units as well as armored, paratroop, special operations and artillery forces are poised for an imminent coordinated invasion of the northern Iraqi autonomous province of Kurdistan.

Our sources pinpoint the target of the combined Iranian-Turkish offensive as the Quandil Mountains (see picture), where some 5,000 Kurdish rebels from Turkey and Iran, members of the PKK and PJAK respectively, are holed up. Iranian and Turkish assault troops are already deployed 7-8 km deep inside Iraqi territory.

I was talking about l'affaire Foley today to a friend whose opinions I respect.

I opined that the GOP is in too steep a dive to pull out of, and that they are toast in the mid-term elections.

He looked at me and said one word that made my blood run cold.

"Iran."

I see this coming, even though some military analysts say that the buildup in the Gulf won't be complete until mid-November.

But what I'm wondering here is whether an attack on Iran would be allowed by the military. It couldn't be just a few airstrikes if it's to carry out some October Surprise elections bump. It would have to be major. I'm not so sure the military would allow it. Thus, the speculation about the possibility of a coup in the US....

"Face justice" is just an expression. We know he doesn't mean habeas corpus.

That's right. "Face justice" may mean "meet his maker" when he ends up dying in a cave from typhoid.
