Bush tonight signals that we are going to pitch our tent with the Shias except we also are going to fight the one Shia, Moktada al Sadr and his Mahdi Army militia, who are the most anti-Iranian of the Shia. Great! The one group of Shias not closely aligned with Iran are the ones we will attack. This is madness...
In casting our lot with Iraqi police we are supporting a Shia force that is the main mover behind the death squads. The Sunnis get that message loud and clear and will hold us responsible. That means more attacks against American soldiers...
At the very moment that Bush wants to isolate Iran we are taking steps to strengthen the very elements in Iraq most closely aligned with Iran. At the same time we are stepping up our efforts to destroy the Iraqi elements least sympathetic to Iran. What is Bush trying to do?

The Iran Connection in Iraq
Bush's speech tonight sounded reasonable. On a superficial level, of course. This is the basic formula behind his presidency. So, let's take one item here from the speech - that the US must escalate in order to stem the tide of Iranian influence. Look a little closer, and guess what? The speech no longer sounds reasonable. It sounds insane.

The speech. I haven't the stomach to watch another spew of lies and fantasies. But I did watch a few minutes of it with the sound off. Three observations: (1) It wasn't filmed in the Oval Office but in the White House Library, with a background of books.(Subliminal message: the Dicider has Studied Deeply, OK). (2) He was wearing a sincerity-blue tie. (3) He's pretty much quit doing that very unattractive & aggressive "tongue-thing"-- for lack of a better word. He had a habit of sticking out his tongue now and then as he was speaking. Tonight he was definitely more subdued. He looked seriously freaked. His eyes were steady but the energy behind them was very weak. Try watching Lou Dobbs with the sound turned off. You'll get 11 emotions a minute.

Last night US soldiers attacked and sacked an Iranian consulate in the sovereign and self-secured Kurdish zone. To me it looks like Bush House is dead set on escalation and responding to the initial domestic reception to the "surge" has attacked Iran and pissed off Kurds to jump start a international regional war such as would make escalation unavoidable, would either enable an attack on Iranian enrichment facilities or make Iran more fearful about maintaining its nuke program, or in any event might keep some kind of neocon dream alive.
