Exactly. What is it that the US would actually win at this point, if it were winning anything at all? And then, why should we hold out for that victory, or the unnamed thing that constitutes something resembling and/or spinnable as "winning"?
Tell me, really.

It's about exiting gracefully, not about overcoming an opponent. It's about "face"--national face, presidential face, governmental, institutional, partisanal and individual. We're looking for the omelette to rationalize the eggs we're breaking, or like Adam Smith's Invisible Hand. We went in on a valiant Neocon/WMD story and nothing worthy of ballad to come out with yet but for tragedy. What's the carrier banner say if we leave now? "Holocaust Accomplished!"
