Bits and Pieces - November 7, 2009

Some of the collateral damage from exorbitant executive salaries. The argument goes that if everyone else in an equivalent position is making those obscene multiples, so should [fill in blank]. Not a good argument, but seems to be effective. Also compare this; previous equivalent salaries were in the half-million-and-under range.

Monday is the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the articles are starting to come thick and fast. Here are two pretty good ones:

James Mann on the context of "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." Not what the conservatives think.

Timothy Garton Ash in the Los Angeles Times. (Ahem! should be "a historically unprecedented European Union stretching from Lisbon to Narva"!)
