Double standards and freedom of speech

Double on double standards, actually. Where do you stand? Is it only freedom of speech vs. government regulation and legislation?

BBC:

In Austria, a commentator on a leading daily has no doubts that the sentence was fully justified, notwithstanding that the country is a democracy.

But elsewhere, commentators worry that the sentence has undermined the fundamental democratic right of freedom of speech, and argue the principle should be upheld however abhorrent the views expressed.

Khaleej Times:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel renewed her criticism yesterday of the Iranian president’s dismissal of the Holocaust, describing his remarks as “unspeakable.”

Merkel was detailing what she described as “completely new and foreign and security policy conditions” as her conservative Christian Democrats launched a review of a 12-year-old basic statement of policy.

“Today’s Iranian president denies the Holocaust in an unspeakable way, he wants to erase Israel from the map,” she said. “In view of the new problems,” she added, her party should review the fact that the previous policy platform did not explicitly mention Israel’s right to exist.

Not to mention Austria just used the threat of a three-year prison term to coerce David Irving to recant his denial of the Holocaust, which is illegal under Austrian law.
