The excitement builds. World Cup 2006 starts in three days! The NY Times is even trying to blog it.
Let me know who you think will make the final four and the final, and who will take the Cup. We can't quite tell yet how the brackets will play out after the first round, so feel free to choose anyone on either side. Apart from Brazil, that is.
I think the Czechs could pull off a stunner. Maybe not the final. Spain will tank as usual. Germany could plod along into the semifinals. England will go down in a blaze of hooligan glory. Italy will be the surprise dog of the tournament - I'm going out on a limb to say they won't make it out of the first round. Holland is a darkhorse. France has a few great young players to go with the retirees, and could make a Cup of it in Zidane's final year. I will be very surprised if the US doesn't come in last in its group.
Updates to come....

US last? I think they'll beat Ghana. The US caught a very lucky break 15 years ago, when Freddy Adu's mother moved from Ghana to the United States.
Ghana is tougher than you might think, and part of the threat is related to prepping for the two other big teams - the Italians and the Czechs. Adu isn't on the US team this year, so that's kind of a wash.
I still stand by the prediction that Italy doesn't make it out of the first round and that the Czechs are a serious overall threat for the Cup. The US will at least have to tie Ghana and beat Italy to make it through. I think they can do that, but the money would have to be on them coming in fourth in the group.
