Ah, Theobroma, the broma of the gods.... NPR Science Friday recently did a segment on the risk of a global chocolate crisis, because of spreading diseases of the tree and the fact that crops are mostly monoculture of a selected variety.

I've heard about the chocolate crisis. Venezuela, however, insists it has the finest cacao in the world (it's pretty damn good), and it's relatively untouched by international trade as yet. Maybe we have another dependency coming up. There will be wars fought to wean ourself from dependence on foreign chocolate.
