Skyline Caverns

A visit to the Shenandoah the past two days, including Skyline Caverns this morning before heading back to DC. We had never visited any of the caves that are so widely advertised in the area. We took the obligatory guided tour. Checked out the usual stalagmites, stalactites, and Skyline's anthodites. Once we reached 200-some feet under the surface, the guide announced that they would present a recorded creationist message. Anyone who was uncomfortable with this was free to leave. It turns out that the cave is part of the wonders of God's creation and so on, that when we return to our cold "glass and steel" buildings in "The City" dominated by alienating modern technologies that we should try to learn from the cave experience that God creates all.

Just a simple message here, My Brethren. If you visit the Shenandoah, take some time to get acquainted with the creationist message trapped 200 feet below the surface in a dark cave.

Yeesh! Talk about your Captive Audience!

We went to Skyline Caverns when the kids were babies -- maybe 12 years ago? -- and no such service (all senses) was provided to our unlucky tour-group.

I think your strategy should be to turn on your heel, stalk out the 200 vertical feet, and demand the return of your thirty pieces of silver.

I actually wanted to stay. Madame Helmut did not.

Kind of a combination of Plato, Jesus, and Herbert Marcuse.

Try Luray Caverns.  Last time I went there, there was no proselytising, and this was only a few years ago.

I went to both Skyline and Luray Caverns as a kid, and I remember Skyline as "the lame one."

I'll go to Luray if I can get a little Vishnu to balance things out.

Bizarre. Guess Skyline Caverns must be privately owned?

Yes, Skyline Caverns is certainly privately owned (by "Skyline Group, Inc." no less) and it has no connection whatsoever to Shenandoah National Park or the National Park Service.

You are all certainly retarded. All the Caverns in Virginia are privetly owned and it isn't by any corporation, inc, biz, w/e of any kind.

No cavern is "lame" Skyline and Luray are to completley different caves. Skyline Caverns guides are more personable and actually talk to the tourists and try to make you feel at home. As where Luray tourguides talk and run, and Luray are WAY more commercialized why would you want to see something that has been polished up when you could see something more natural.

I'll never read your replys to this, but you are certainly idiots.

And although I don't agree completly agree with our presentation it has been there for over 50 years and should be a part of the tour.

Right on! That presentation has been down there for 50+ years. You get the damned option to depart from the tour so you wouldn't be offended and you still cry about it! If you don't want hear it take the guides advice and follow him out!

Oh cry me a river, are you going to die if you hear it? No!

Yep, that's what you all sound like... A bunch of whiny kids.

Wow, you Skyline people are also pretty crude as well.

But you're right. I suggest that everyone visiting Skyline Caverns take the generous option of being escorted out. Since there was only one escort, this means leaving any remaining visitors nervously trapped 200 feet down for perhaps ten minutes. I'm sure the Skyline crew will be pleased to help on each and every tour, as they have suggested here in the comments.

Of course, another option would be to inform visitors of the proselytizing in advance. Apparently, that wouldn't be good for business.
